Part of it is the softness I realize that I need larger diffusers (softboxes, umbrellas) the other is not getting the light balanced right; it's usually to contrasty or just not quite enough what kind of ratios do you attempt for in you lighting? For example your photo of Alex in the "Adding Props" post.
